My favourite job is the current job I have! Knowing that our work can fund the further research of medicines and anti-cancer therapies is really rewarding when you think about it

Great question – I am fortunate to say I have had many jobs, I got my first job in a cinema at 16. I started in the summer after my GCSEs and before 6th form started. That was a good job, worked most weekends enjoyed the perks of free cinema tickets and the people I worked with were all great and made it fun.

During University I worked during the semester time in a bar on weekends, that was fun but hard work and the extra money allowed me to enjoy my uni learning, and then in the holidays from Uni I worked in a Bingo Club as much as I could to boost my savings. This job actually provided a unique opportunity to go to South Africa and help the company establish clubs there, and this really challenged my communication and interpersonal skills.

My current role, has given me so much, and I have grown so much as well both personally and professionally to.

They have all been my favourites.

Mmmm I’ve worked as a scientist most of my working life. My first job was as an office admin and was only for 3 months. Can’t say I enjoyed that a lot.

My second job was as a receptionist for an engineering company. It was very routine and I’m grateful because it paid for my undergrad degree. I could also study at work since it was not too demanding.

After that job, I became a research scientist, my favourite by far! The aspect I have enjoyed the most is working on finding a vaccine to HIV. The virus is a major issue in Southern Africa and I’m proud to have contributed to the work that is going on in that field.

I have worked so many jobs and thankfully have enjoyed most of them. In high school I worked at a Mexican restaurant and a gym. In uni I worked at a gym, the law school library, a pizza place and a bagel restaurant and in the summers I was an admin assistant at a genetics counselling department of a hospital. Then it was on to two research technician positions after I did my master’s degree and I’m currently a research assistant, which I also enjoy. The perks of the food jobs was free food (burritos, pizza and bagels got me through high school and uni) and the benefit of every job I’ve had is the people I’ve worked with. In my opinion the people you work with is nearly as important as the work itself!

My favourite job was working for a river boat cruise company. This my summer job I’d come home from university to do. I really enjoyed it because as well as cruises up and down the river the company also hosted parties on this boat and it was very fun to be a part of the guests special day! We did lots of wedding parties and birthday parties so there was always music and food and everyone was always very happy. It also meant I got to spend all summer working outside and being fairly active which is important to me!

Like everyone else I’ve had quite a few jobs over the past years! In high school I worked at a panda-themed children’s soft play and basically got to play and go down the slides every weekend which was so fun. At university I was also working as a waiter in an Indian restaurant so like Charlene said – I also got free food every weekend.

My favourite job has to be the one I have now though, I love coming to work in the lab and work on my project. Every single day is different – some are better than others(!) but I can feel really proud of the work I do at the moment! I’m constantly learning new things and I get to see my friends every day.

Thanks for your question! It’s really made me think back over all the jobs that I have had. I have been lucky enough to have had a job when I have needed one since I was 16, and I can think of 3 standout favourites.

I actually started as a gymnastics coach when I was 14 but in a volunteer role, when I was 16 I was employed in the job. It was a great job for a student as it was only 4 hours on a Sunday morning and it paid well above the minimum wage at the time. I really enjoyed that job and have coached gymnastics on and off ever since, I have coached in America and am currently I am a trampoline coach for Edinburgh University’s trampoline club. Considering that its a job that I keep going back too, I would say that this is one of my favourite roles. It’s something I am very confident in and know I can do and I love seeing the gymnasts improving week on week.

I worked at Deep Sea World, a local aquarium, as an aquarist and a diver, and that job involved looking after the animals, diving with the sharks, teaching the public and creating new exhibits to showcase marine animals and promote conservation and education. I loved this job, I had so much fun, I made friends for life and so it’s definitely a top 3!

Then I became a zebrafish technician, which is what I currently do. I still look after animals, just one species instead of whole bunch, which has made it easier to become an expert in their care (or at least be on the way to being an expert). I do miss the diving with the sharks, but I really enjoy being involved in the research that goes on at my institute and I have learnt so much since starting here!

I love my current job! Working as a research assistant with the Wellcome Sanger to investigate essential genes in cancer cells can direct future research into new medicines, which is super rewarding

Additionally, pre-covid I worked as a Camp Counsellor in Maine, USA for 7 weeks. It was a lot of fun, as I was able to take part in all the activities that the campers were doing, including water skiing! So, outside of science, this was definitely my favourite job.

I had great fun during summer jobs working at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where I’d be doing silly things like telling audiences to sit down through dancing to 80s music with a drag queen dressed as former prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Though I had to clean a lot of bins in that job, so every job has its ups and downs!

Before my PhD I worked at Cancer Research UK’s offices in London, managing databases of information about new drugs being developed from research the charity funds. This was such a cool place to work, I loved the charity sector and had a great team, but the actual work was a bit boring.

I like the work I do now, it’s really interesting and I do some very cool stuff, but it can also be frustrating. Every day is different and I really like the variety of being able to get up and walk around to mess about with my cells, or go and set up a reaction. I work with a lovely bunch of people as well which helps when experiments dont work, a lot of the time the people you work with can really influence your job!

Difficult for me to say, I’ve only had my current job!

Doing a PhD is more or less a job too, as you work incredibly long hours but ultimately it was similar stuff to what I’m doing now. That said there’s a lot of different parts to it and I really enjoy doing outreach like this and moving forward this may be something I go into professionally.
